Video Transcript for Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II Review

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.

We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.

This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.

You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.

Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II - 2" Hitches - BX88224

Average Customer Rating:  4.6 out of 5 stars   (229 Customer Reviews)

Tighten up your connection. This hitch receiver immobilizer keeps your tow bar, drop receiver, bike rack and other hitch-mounted accessories from rattling and shifting while you're on the road.

by:

I used this on a bike rack. The immobilizer was placed on the hitch before the 12 in riser. It worked great until one of the small support pieces broke. That caused the whole rack to wobble. I contacted E-Trailor and they gave the phone number of Blue Ox. I called them, sent a copy of invoice and 2 photos, and a new immobilizer is on its way. That's what I call customer service from both, E-Trailor and Blue Ox. I will definitely buy from them again.

by:

Doesn't stay tight. I've tightened to the point of almost breaking the bolts and when we stop after 300 or so miles it's loose again. Won't buy again and won't recommend.

This is designed to fit a 2 inch hitch receiver. Can you please confirm what the measurement is of your hitch receiver? As well as the brand of hitch you are using?

So, I have spoken with the manufacturer and they have suggested that when installing the immobilizer, you should have weight on the hitch for it to be tight enough, this should help the nuts from loosening. The issue could also be that you may need to get some new nylon lock nuts.

by:

This is great. It holds my bike rack securely even on mountain roads. I no longer have to worry that my bike rack will fall off as I drive. A huge improvement over my previous hookup.

by:

This product did a really good job of stabilizing my motorcycle carrier , and keep it from rocking. I had used another product before this , but it did not work nearly as good as this one. This one holds the receiver solidly to the hitch ,and is good quality.

by:

Does a great job taking all the "slop" out of the cargo carrier connection with the hitch receiver!

by:

Have used 2 times now. Function is good. My application causes me to losen hardware to remove the hitch. I think the hardware may ware out due these cycles quicker than usual. Time will tell.

by:

I installed this yesterday in order to stabilize the receiver to the Kuat Pivot, which was also secured to my Kuat 2.0. The Kuat 2.0 and the Kuat Pivot have their own stabilizers built in so they are very tight and don’t wobble at all. I am extremely pleased to see how tight this Blue Ox stabilizer made my receiver to the Kuat bike rack system. I haven’t driven with these items but I do not expect they will fail their current condition of being tight and stable.

by:

Product work well and installation was simple.

by:

product arrived on time an instructions were easy to follow but

by:

Put them on, looks like they wil work as advertised

by:

I use this with a Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III and it works great - it completely eliminates any 'wiggle' between the hitch and the ball mount. I had to grind away a bit of the immobilizer because it was interfering with the ball mount - no biggie. The attached photo shows where I removed a bit of the bracket.

by:

better u bolts than competitors. I'd buy it again

by:

The hitch immobilizer has kept our Blue Ox tow bar tight for over 11,000 miles and eliminated the hitch rattle. Very well built product and good investment.

by:

Like others have said, this works great. Super easy to put on the hitch and tightened up the slop in my hitch extender. Not the cheapest hitch immobilizer but I didn't want to waste money on one that wouldn't work and then end up ordering this one. As always, etrailer shipped it right away and it arrived a day early. This is a good product, I doubt you will be disappointed if you order it.

by:

Works as expected and arrived on time

High quality product. Installed on the towbar and extension. Does not move! Thanks for the great service.

by:

These really work! It's great to not have the wiggle in the hitch. There is no noise that comes from the hitch anymore moving around in the receiver. The one thing to think about is that even though it is easy to attach, once it is on, it's not simple to take off. Since I am using this on my towbar with my motorhome, I now just leave the towbar attached to the motorhome rather than taking is off and storing it in one of the storage bins. I just use my towbar cover now all the time when the towbar is not in use. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to eliminate the noise and wiggle that you get from your hitch.

A year later and these are still working great! They eliminate all of the chatter that comes from components of the hitch moving around. I just check the bolts for tightness every so often. I highly recommend this product if you are towing anything behind your motorhome.

The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II was delivered on the scheduled date. Within minutes, I had installed the device on the hitch of my pickup truck. Installation was a piece of cake, and the Immobilizer works exactly as advertised. There is no more rattle or movement associated with my hitch. PS -- I'm glad I took the time to read the Q&As associated with anti-rattle devices before placing my order. Several of the devices that I had looked at on the web site were not to be used for towing, and the Q&As provided the relevant explanation. The Blue Ox device was recommended for towing, which is why I purchased it. I expect it to be in use for the life of my truck. Very pleased!

The Blue Ox Immobilizer is still on my pickup truck and working just as well as it did when it was first installed. This item is worth every penny! Highly recommended!

by:

This product does exactly what it claims to do. Unlike stabilizers that provide pressure in only one direction, this Blue Ox product provides pressure in a vertical and horizontal direction. Therefor, the hitch is forced into a corner and completely immobilized. in addition, since "U" clamps are used and not bolts, there is no possibility of bolts shifting or bending. The Blue Ox receiver immobilizer design and quality is worth its high price.

Bill A.

9/29/2018

Originally, it appeared to be a good product but after a year no so much. Currently, i’m unable to tighten the “U” bolts enough to restrict movement of the hitch. The “L” shaped bracket has bent to the point where it no longer works properly.

Depending on your application, you may want to consider the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061. We have had very few customer complaints with the Roadmaster products quality. This anti-rattle works in the same way as the Blue Ox, just a slightly different design.

All components very well made and solid, with good finish. Delivery packaging offered good protection. Installation instructions clear.

Service from etrailer.com was excellent - questions answered fully and promptly before order placed, price promise to match other supplier prices honored, order out for delivery within 24 hours with tracking information, and e-mail sent immediately after products delivered with supplier product info and instruction PDFs all gathered together in one place.

Thanks for the very professional follow-up on the Blue Ox products I bought. In the end, I only used the set-up for about 3,000 miles before I changed my rig from a Class C towing a Jeep Wrangler using the Blue Ox parts to a Jeep Grand Cherokee towing an Airstream. Everything worked just fine for those 3,000 miles and all the parts have been sold on, practically as new, [on-line].

by:

Missing hardware. No nuts.

by:

The Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II - 2" is excellent. Using it to secure our 4 bike rack to our vehicle. Very easy to put on and makes the bike rack completely solid to our vehicle.

Still great! Would definitely recommend it.

by:

Works very well ! Only wish I had found this product sooner, like 20 years ago. No more stares when passing through town, no more loud hitch rattle sounding like sledge hammer on plate steel. We will see how the nuts hold up after repeated use. But have plenty on hand to replace if needed. Thanks CD

Clarence

8/2/2019

This product is still after a year of use every bit as effective as it was new. The nuts have worn sime grooves into the main body but this does not bother the products function. At first hands on of the product I was sure the nuts andor the threaded rods would wear out quickly. This will eventually happen as everything wears out with use, but again it has been a year and it appears it will be several more before replacing the nuts. Great ptoduct. I recommend this to anyone with a rattling hitch.
